SYNCHRONICITY | Naoya Ikegami
Admiring Kazuo Ohno
Feb 1st – March 8, 2014, sprout curation
Naoya Ikegami has been taking photographs of performances and rehearsals by Kazuo Ohno the Butoh legend from the day Ohno made a debut with “La Argentina” in 1977 at the age of 71 to the time God called him in 2010. Ikegami is the only one who witnessed and recorded all the performances by Ohno into the form of photograph.
Ikegami recalls the day he witnessed Ohno’s debut, “I was astonished by the strong emotional energy coming out from Ohno’s body which required me to use full of my energy to photograph him. A series of very simple movements, choreographed and directed by Tatsumi Hijikata, grasped audience’s hearts and brought them into the sentimental and sensational world”.
Once a dance is performed, it can never be recreated. It may stay in the audience’s memory, but never the same. Through photographs or the eyes of a photographer, each moment of a dance can be captured forever. And the series of photographs may be able to reproduce the dance.
Ikegami says, “33 years have passed since I first took a photo of Ohno. I am very happy to present his beautiful physical expression in a form of photographic art because capturing him into my works had become my life work.”
SYNCHRONICITY | Naoya Ikegami will be held at sprout curation, in a Gallery Complex, Kiyosumi Shirakawa, Tokyo. All the works are monochrome on baryta paper since the artist believes monochrome and its gradation suit to show the sentimental and sensational world, which is not the same in digital photographs. Among 9 original prints that will be displayed in the gallery is a famous work used for Antony & the Johnsons CD Jacket.
Many events are also planned during the exhibition such as Butoh dance performances and a gallery talk on Naoya Ikegami and Kasuo Ohno.
